A MAN ENTERS

MARK

Hey, Babe.

LISA

                                                                  Mmmmmmm… Hey yourself. (pause)
                                                                  Got anything for me?

MARK

   Not today. (briefly kisses LISA)

LISA

(playfully slaps MARK on the chest)
You!  (pause) I heard from the insurance

MARK

(sad and puzzled look) It’s only been two weeks since…

(pause then a faint smile) I guess he would have wanted

it that way.  You deserve it.

LISA

We… deserve it.  You were his best friend and

                                                                   he loved me so much.

MARK

Don't you feel the least bit guilty?

LISA

Yep.  It was me thievery.  They have me

on video stealing the “love chocolates”.

MICHELLE GASPS AND PUTS THE TIPS OF HER FINGERS TO HER LIPS

MICHELLE

I tried to tell you. (growing angry)

Was it worth it?  Was it?

MIKE GAZES INTO THE AIR FOR WHAT SEEMS LIKE AN ETERNITY AND SMILES

MIKE

Yeah.  It was worth it.  Remember the time

when we were in Lisa’s apartment.

MICHELLE INTERRUPTS HIM

MICHELLE

You mean the first time that we met Lisa’s mother

even though we were friends with Lisa for

years and years?  Even more odd is that

her mother comes over all of the time and

                                                                   we never once crossed paths?

                                                                   And you forgot your underwear?

I just don’t want to see you anymore!”.

PETER AND MARK LAUGH

MARK

Oh Peter.  I do not know how you can stand

to be a psychologist with those people.

PETER PAUSES AND BECOME SERIOUS

PETER.

                                                                                 It pays well.

THE TWO LAUGH.  ACROSS THE ROOM A FRAMED SPOON FALLS FROM THE ENDTABLE.  PETER, STUNNED, LOOKS AT MARK.

MARK

Yeah, now you have seen it too.  This place…

some weird shit has been going on.

PETER GULPS

PETER

                                                                   Mark.  What’s… going on?

MARK

It all started just after Johnny’s “incident”.

After the Cleaners finished in the bedroom.

Cold breezes at first.  Then moaning sounds.

The latest is shit flying around.  I don’t know.

MARK IS FRUSTRATED AND VIOLENTLY SHAKES HIS HEAD

MARK

I don’t know, man.  But it is really starting

to creep me the fuck out.

MARK AND PETER LOOK AT EACH OTHER FOR MANY SECONDS.  THE SILENCED IS PIERCED BY A POUNDING AT THE DOOR.

DENNY

Mark!  Mark!  Please let me in!

MARK RUSHES TO THE DOOR AND OPENS IT.  DENNY BREATHING HEAVY, FLOPS IN AND ENDS UP DOWN ON HIS KNEES.  MARK KNEELS AT DENNY’S SIDE.

MARK

                                                                   Denny.  What’s wrong?!

DENNY GASPS FOR AIR.  MARK LOOKS UP AT PETER.

DENNY

I think that I killed Saul.

MARK

                                                                   WHAT?!  WHERE?!  WHEN?!

DENNY

Last night.  In the alley.  I was there to…

MARK

                                                                   To what?

DENNY

To sell him drugs.  He has been

                                                                   really depressed since Johnny’s party.

He blames himself.  After the party,

if he hadn’t talked Peter out of going up

and seeing Johnny, then Johnny wouldn’t have…

                                                                   (voice trailing off) killed himself.

PETER KICKS A CHAIR

PETER

                                                                    Bastard.

MARK

What are you two talking about?

PETER

                                                                    It doesn’t matter now.

                                                                    Denny, what happened?

DENNY

Like I said, Saul was buying drugs.

He got nervous.  Which made me nervous.

I was fumbling with the stuff and he reached out.

I didn’t know what he was doing, so I reached

in the bag, pulled out the gun and shot him.

After that, I don’t know what happened.  I just ran.

MARK GOES TO THE WINDOW AND LOOKS DOWN.  NEXT TO A SMATTERING OF BROKEN GLASS IS A BODY.

MARK

                                                                   Yep.  Looks like Saul.  DAMN!

PETER

I’m out of here.  Saul was an asshole.

filed for bankruptcy.  Evidently their funds

were not managed properly and there

                                                                    was rampant embezzlement.

LISA

Enough about Johnny.  Johnny’s job.  Whatever.

Mark

Wow!  Listen to this.  The San Francisco area

has had a serial killer for the past

                                                                   five or seven years.

LISA

That’s an odd set of numbers.  (deep in thought)

                                                                   Hmmmmmmmm…

MARK

There has been a coverup at the highest levels of local                                                                                          government.  It says that the victims were all exsanguinated

Yeah.  What are you going to do?

LISA

Mark, do you know something about this?

MARK GETS UP AND WALKS TO THE WINDOW.  HE GAZES AT THE STARS.

MARK

See for yourself. (motions toward the window)

LISA APPROACHES AND LOOKS OUT OF THE WINDOW.  STARTING AT THE STARS, SHE EVENTUALLY LOOKS DOWN.  IN THE ALLEY IS A CHALK OUTLINE OF A BODY.

LISA

Denny pushed him off the roof?

MARK

                                                                    (somewhat amused) No.

Remember the gunshot the other night.

That was Denny.  He killed Saul.

LISA

                                                                    (hysterical) WHAT?!?!  No!  No!!  NO!!!

MARK PULLS LISA TO HIM AND HUGS HER.  LISA CRIES ON HIS CHEST.

LISA

                                                                     (sobbing) Oh, Mark.

THE TWO HOLD EACH OTHER TIGHT THEN RELAX.  THEY ARE FACE TO FACE.  TEARS STREAM FROM LISA’S EYES.  THEY KISS SOFTLY.  THEN HARDER.  THEN HARDER.  CAMERA PANS TO CLOSEUP OF HOT CANDLE.

25.  EXT.  ROOFTOP. DAY.

LISA, DENNY, CLAUDETTE AND A MAN ARE IN A CIRCLE, DEEP IN DISCUSSION.  THE VIEW IS QUITE SPECTACULAR.

LISA

Steven, what is Denny’s next move?

Steven

(TO LISA) Well, it was good that you had

the one million dollar bail to get him out of jail.

He would have been eaten alive.

(TO DENNY)  Now that I know your side,

                                                                    I can best represent you.

DENNY

I’m scared.  Chris R is a bad dude.  He is gunna get me.

LISA

No, Denny.  We will protect you. (looking around)

                                                                    We all will.

STEVEN

The most important thing for you to do is lay low.

Is there someplace for you to stay?

LISA

He can stay with me.  Denny lives in the same building,

so that is the last place Chris R will look.

DENNY

I can’t endanger you, Lisa.  What if you get hurt?

I will never be able to forgive myself.

LISA

Denny, we are family.  (HUGS DENNY).

                                                                    Everything will be alright.

A CROW CAWS IN THE DISTANCE AND FLIES AWAY

CLAUDETTE

That was strange. (TO LISA) Where did you get

that kind of money and why was this the first

                                                                    I have heard about it?

LISA

                                                                    Don’t worry about it, Mom.

CLAUDETTE

Oh, alright.  Nobody tells me anything.

Denny, Lisa is right, we will protect you.

27. INT. LISA AND MARK’S LIVING ROOM.  NIGHT.

THE ROOM IS DARK, SAVE FOR A SINGLE CANDLE.  DENNY IS CURLED UP ON THE COUCH.  THE DOORBELL RINGS.  A VOICE CAN BE HEARD ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR.

UNKNOWN PERSON

                                                                    Pizza delivery.

DENNY PAUSES THEN GOES TO THE DOOR.  HE PEEKS THROUGH THE PEEP HOLE AND SEES THE DELIVERY PERSON WITH THE PIZZA THAT HE ORDERED.  DENNY COUNTS OUT HIS MONEY AND OPENS THE DOOR.  THE PIZZA DELIVERY MAN IS PUSHED ASIDE AND FALLS TO THE GROUND.  IN THE DOORWAY IS CHRIS R.

CHRIS R

                                                                    Hey Denny.

CHRIS R TAKES DENNY’S MONEY AND THROWS IT AT THE DELIVERY PERSON.

CHRIS R

(TO THE DELIVERY PERSON) Now get out of here!

THE DELIVERY PERSON GETS UP AND RUNS AWAY.  CHRIS R PICKS UP THE PIZZA BOX AND SHOVES IT INTO DENNY'S GUT.  DENNY STEPS BACK AND CHRIS R ENTERS THE APARTMENT.

DENNY

Hey, Chris R. (pause then begins to cry)

I didn’t tell them anything.  At least that you

                                                                    were involved.

CHRIS R THROWS THE PIZZA BOX BEHIND THE COUCH.

CHRIS R

Come here Denny.  We need to talk.

DENNY TURNS AND RUNS.  HE TRIPS ON THE COFFEE TABLE IN THE DARKNESS AND CRASHES INTO AN END TABLE.  THE ITEMS ON THE END TABLE CRASH TO THE FLOOR.  CHRIS R STANDS OVER DENNY. DENNY SCRAMBLES, PICKING UP AN OBJECT AND GETS TO HIS FEET.  HE RAISES A SPOON AND POINTS IT AT CHRIS R.

CHRIS R

(LAUGHS) You (pause) are (pause) dead!

DENNY REARS BACK AND THROWS THE SPOON AT CHRIS R.  BEFORE IT CAN REACH IT’S INTENDED TARGET, AN INCREDIBLY STRONG BLAST OF AIR SWOOPS IN AND CARRIES CHRIS R OUT OF THE OPEN WINDOW.  POV SHOT STRAIGHT DOWN AS CHRIS R CRASHES TO THE ALLEY BELOW.  THE SPOON HITS THE WALL. DENNY NOW HORRIFIED, LOOKS AT THE WINDOW.  DENNY IS ON THE VERGE OF A PANIC ATTACK.  THE BLAST OF AIR RETURNS BACK THROUGH THE WINDOW.  FROM THE DARKENSS, A LARGE FULL DUFFEL BAG IS TOSSED AT DENNY.  HE CATCHES IT, CONFUSED.  CAMERA ZOOMS IN ON THE SIDE OF THE BAG.  IT READS “SAN FRANSICSO CITY BANK”.  A VOICE COMES FROM THE DARKNESS.

UNKNOWN PERSON.

                                                                    Oh, hai Denny. (pause)

Now, leaf and nefur come back.

DENNY’S HORROR KNOWS NO BOUNDS.  HE TURNS TO THE DOOR AND RUNS OUT.  THE WIND BLOWS OUT OF THE WINDOW.  A FIGURE COMES DOWN THE CIRCULAR STAIRS.

LISA
